Notably, the largest drops in single-family activity were seen in the urban cores of major metro areas (down about 14% year-over-year, for a fifth consecutive quarterly decline), but this was actually a slight improvement from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, smaller metro outlying counties bucked the trend with a 1% uptick after four straight quarters of declines. Rural areas slipped by 1%, and non-rural areas by 7%. Multifamily construction, on the other hand, gained momentum thanks to steady rental demand, offering some balance to the overall residential market.
